If you have a Swiggy HDFC Bank Credit Card and just got a message from the bank about "upgrading" it, it isn’t a fake message. HDFC is actually retiring the original Swiggy HDFC Bank Credit Card entirely.

Every existing cardholder is being moved, in phases, to one of two newer cards: Swiggy Ornge or Swiggy BLCK. And this isn’t optional. You can’t keep the card you have.

We covered the launch of these two cards when HDFC first introduced them, in our piece on the Swiggy Ornge and Swiggy BLCK edition launch. What was missing at the time was any word on what happens to the people who already held the original card. That word has now arrived.

A real cashback rate cut is hiding inside the option HDFC defaults you into if you do nothing. And there are half a dozen small, boring tasks (autopay, mandates, card controls) that only you can do (but only after the switch).

TL;DR

  • HDFC is phasing out the original Swiggy HDFC Bank Credit Card and migrating every holder to Swiggy Ornge or Swiggy BLCK. You can't retain the old card.
  • The bank contacts you in phases and lets you choose. If you ignore the message, you’re auto-migrated to Swiggy Ornge after at least 30 days' notice.
  • Swiggy Ornge earns 5% cashback on Swiggy, half the old card's 10%. Swiggy BLCK keeps the 10% rate but usually carries a ₹1,000 annual fee.
  • If your old card was lifetime free, Ornge stays lifetime free. If it was a paid card, Ornge becomes lifetime free. BLCK costs ₹1,000 a year either way, though a paid-card holder gets the first year free.
  • Your old card dies the moment you transact on the new one, or 60 days after the new card is issued, or when the old card expires, whichever comes first.
  • Autopay, e-mandates and card controls (spend limits, international usage) do not carry over. You have to set every one of them up again on the new card.

This is happening, and you don't get a say

HDFC has confirmed that the original Swiggy card is being phased out and "cannot be retained." Cardholders are contacted in stages, so two people with identical cards can be several weeks apart in getting the message.

If you haven’t heard anything yet, the communication may have landed in your SMS or email spam folder. It’s also possible that your card was flagged as blocked, or your turn simply may not have come yet.

If you do respond and pick a variant, you get some control over the outcome. If you don't, HDFC moves you to Swiggy Ornge on its own timeline. It’ll send a migration notice at least 30 days in advance. Either way, migration is happening. The only real decision left in your hands is which of the two cards you want to end up with.

Ornge halves your Swiggy cashback rate

This detail is easy to miss because "lifetime free" sounds like good news on its own.

The original Swiggy HDFC Bank Credit Card paid 10% cashback on Swiggy app spends (food delivery, Instamart, Dineout and Genie), capped at ₹1,500 per billing cycle.

Swiggy Ornge, the card you get by default, pays 5% on the same spends, with the same ₹1,500 cap. Swiggy BLCK is the only one of the two new cards that keeps the original 10% rate.

Annual fee, standard terms

₹500 (waived at ₹2L annual spend)

₹500 (waived at ₹1.5L annual spend)

₹1,000 (waived at ₹2L annual spend)

Here's the math that decides which card is actually right for you.

Both cards cap your Swiggy cashback at ₹1,500 a month, no matter which one you have. The only thing that changes is the rate you earn on the way there, and that changes how much you have to spend to hit that ₹1,500 ceiling.

On Ornge, you earn 5%. So you need to spend ₹30,000 a month on Swiggy before you're capped out. On BLCK, you earn 10%. You hit that same ₹1,500 cap at just ₹15,000 a month.

So below ₹15,000 a month in Swiggy spend, BLCK is simply earning you double what Ornge would, on the same money. That gap (5% extra) is the entire benefit of paying for BLCK.

Now, compare that against BLCK's cost: ₹1,000 a year.

The question becomes: how much do you need to spend for that extra 5% to add up to ₹1,000 over a year? Do the division and it comes out to about ₹1,700 a month, or ₹20,000 a year, in Swiggy orders, Instamart and Dineout combined.

So the whole decision comes down to: how much do you actually spend on Swiggy in a typical month?

If it's more than ₹1,700, BLCK's fee is already paying for itself, and you come out ahead by choosing it. If it's less than that, don't bother paying for BLCK. Ornge earns you almost the same in practice, and it's free.

What happens to your annual fee

HDFC's fee treatment on migration depends on what your existing card's fee status is, not on the general public pricing of Ornge or BLCK.

If your existing Swiggy HDFC card is lifetime free, Swiggy Ornge stays lifetime free after migration, no spend threshold attached. Swiggy BLCK, on the same LTF starting point, costs ₹1,000 a year from the outset.

If your existing card is a prized card, Swiggy Ornge becomes lifetime free once you migrate, which is a straightforward upgrade regardless of how much you spend. Swiggy BLCK is offered as first-year-free, with the ₹1,000 annual fee kicking in from the second year.

What breaks the day you switch, and what you need to redo

A few things that we must highlight separately.

  • Autopay, e-mandates and standing instructions need to be re-registered. Every single one, using the new card's details, before you rely on the new card for recurring payments.
  • Card controls, i.e. transaction limits, online and offline usage toggles and international usage settings, reset to default on the new card. If you changed the settings on your old card, you have to set it up again.
  • Your card number changes. The new card is issued with a fresh number, not a reissue of the old one.
  • You cannot switch back. Once you've consented and the new card is issued, HDFC's terms are explicit that the old card can't be reinstated.

The old card doesn't die the instant the new one arrives in your hands. It stays usable until you make your first transaction on the new card or 60 days pass from the date the new card was issued. If your old card has its own expiry date before that, it will die anyway.

Consider that window your grace period to move all the mandates over smoothly. Only after you have sorted autopay mandates and card controls should you make your first purchase.

Delivery, activation and the welcome benefit

Once you're migrated, the new physical card is dispatched to the address on file with HDFC and typically arrives within 7 to 10 working days. It shows up inside the Swiggy app separately, within 20 days of the upgrade.

Your welcome benefit (12-month Swiggy One on Ornge, three months of Swiggy BLCK on BLCK) arrives as a redeemable coupon. It’s sent within 20 days of activation, and it stays valid for one year from your card's issuance date.

If you already hold a Swiggy One or Swiggy BLCK membership when you redeem that coupon, HDFC doesn’t stack the new benefits.

Moving from BLCK to Ornge and redeeming cancels your existing BLCK membership with a pro-rata refund and extends your Swiggy One instead. Similar for moving from Ornge to BLCK. Moving within the same membership type simply extends your existing membership by the new duration.

So, which one should you actually pick?

If your existing card is lifetime free, run the ₹1,700-a-month test on your own Swiggy spending. If it’s above it, respond to HDFC's message and choose BLCK. Paying ₹1,000 a year to keep earning 10% instead of 5% comes out ahead once your combined Swiggy, Instamart and Dineout spend crosses that line.

Below it, do nothing and let the default happen. Ornge will land in your hands, still free, and the cashback cut from 10% to 5% won't cost you much.

If your existing card is a paid one, there's no real dilemma for year one: BLCK is free for that first year and pays the higher rate, so you can take it. But still do the math using your actual spend, and see if you should get the now-lifetime-free Ornge.

When you get your card, make sure that you have the autopay and card controls, before making a transaction on the new card.

FAQs about Swiggy HDFC card migration

Do I have to switch to Ornge or BLCK, or can I keep my current Swiggy HDFC card?

You can't keep your current card. HDFC has confirmed the original card is being phased out and can't be retained. Every holder is migrated, either by choice or automatically to Swiggy Ornge after at least 30 days' notice.

Will my autopay and subscriptions move over automatically?

No. Autopay, e-mandates and standing instructions aren’t transferred to the upgraded card. You need to re-register each one on your new card's details before the old card stops working.

When exactly does my old card stop working?

At the earliest of three events: your first transaction on the new card, 60 days from the date the new card was issued, or your old card's own expiry date.

Will I lose the cashback I've already earned on Swiggy Money, or old transactions?

No. Transactions already made on the old card continue to appear on your new card's statement, and you can raise a cashback query on the old card for up to one month after the new card is issued. Transactions settled after the new card is issued earn cashback at the new card's rate, not the old one, regardless of when the purchase itself happened.

Which card should Swiggy power-users pick?

If your combined monthly spend on Swiggy food delivery, Instamart and Dineout regularly crosses roughly ₹1,700, you can choose Swiggy BLCK. Its 10% cashback rate, matched against the ₹1,500 monthly cap both cards have, earns back its ₹1,000 fee (and more once you're past that spend).

Disclaimer

This is my honest read of HDFC Bank's published migration terms, not formal financial advice. Card terms change, and the fee treatment on your specific migration can depend on your account history, so confirm the exact numbers HDFC quotes you before consenting to an upgrade. But this is exactly how I'd think through the choice.
