Who Is Equitas Small Finance Bank, and Where Does It Stand with the RBI?

Equitas Small Finance Bank is a Chennai-based bank that began as a microfinance lender and got its small finance bank licence from the RBI in 2016. As a small finance bank (SFB), it serves smaller borrowers and savers. It takes deposits, gives loans, and issues cards like any other bank.

Equitas started banking operations on 5 September 2016 and became an RBI scheduled bank in February 2017. It listed on the NSE and BSE in October 2020. In early 2023, its parent, Equitas Holdings, was merged into the bank, so the bank itself is now the listed company.

Your deposits at an SFB carry the same DICGC insurance as any bank, up to ₹5 lakh per depositor. That cover is about deposits and has nothing to do with your credit card.

The bank also has a longer-term plan to become a universal bank. However, as of August 2026, the bank hasn’t filed any application with the RBI or set a date.

Credit cards are a very small part of this bank. Per RBI's August 2026 data, Equitas has around 29K cards in force, claiming a 0.02% share among all credit card issuers in India. However, cardholders spend about ₹21,134 per card in a month, the fourth highest among all issuers.

On card networks, Equitas works with Visa and RuPay. Selfe lets you choose between the two, and PowerMiles is offered on both.

Rewards on all Equitas cards exclude fuel, rent, wallet loads, government payments, cash advances and EMI conversions. Accelerated rewards depend on the merchant's category code, so check a shop with the Monzy MCC scanner first.

The point value is different for each card. For Tiga, each point is worth ₹0.15 on vouchers and travel. For Selfe, points are ₹0.35 each. For PowerMiles, they’re valued at ₹0.50 each. Points are worth less as statement cashback, and each redemption costs ₹99.

Selfe is a customisable card. You can choose two categories for 5X rewards (from apparel, dining, grocery, utility, taxi), two free memberships (from Amazon Prime, JioHotstar, SonyLIV and Zee5), the card network (Visa or RuPay), your billing date (12th, 16th or 20th) and your card design. The design can be plain plastic, recycled plastic or metal. Metal costs extra: ₹3,500.

If you skip the choices, Equitas fills them for you: a 12th billing date, regular plastic, Amazon Prime and JioHotstar, apparel and dining as your 5X categories, and a RuPay card. Choose on purpose, because you can change the billing date only once.

Best Equitas Credit Cards to Pick

If you pay for almost everything by UPI, go for Tiga. It pays roughly 0.45% back on those payments. The ₹500 annual fee is waived if you spend ₹1.2 lakh a year, about ₹10,000 a month.

For groceries, dining and utility bills: Selfe. Your preferred categories for spending earn you up to 3.5% back. Its ₹1000 fee is waivable at ₹2.4 lakh a year, which is ₹20,000 a month. It pays well on the everyday spends you already make.

You fly a few times a year, sometimes abroad, and eat at nice restaurants: PowerMiles. It gives roughly 4.5% back on foreign spends, about 2.5% after the 2% forex markup. Spend ₹4.8 lakh a year, about ₹40,000 a month, and the fee is conveniently waived.

Recent Equitas Credit Card News and Launches

PowerMiles' miles transfer and airline conversion features, which Equitas advertised at launch in 2025, are now slated for March 2027. Until then, you're redeeming at ₹0.50 a point for vouchers and travel. The transfer offer to 10+ airline and hotel partners is just a future promise.

In August 2026, Equitas said it would pursue a universal bank licence gradually. There's no timeline, and it needs RBI approval. In June 2026, the bank reported FY26 gross advances of ₹46,165 crore.

An earlier 2021 Equitas card story worth highlighting is that it partnered with HDFC Bank to launch two co-branded cards – Excite and Elegance. But they don't appear in the line-up on Equitas' card page today.

We didn't find any Equitas fee hikes or reward devaluations in 2026. That's a contrast with the many Indian cards devalued in 2026.

FAQs about Equitas credit cards

How many credit cards does Equitas Small Finance Bank have?

Equitas has three credit cards: Tiga, Selfe and PowerMiles. Tiga is the entry card, Selfe is the mid-range customisable card, and PowerMiles is the premium metal travel card.

Is Equitas Bank the same as Equitas Small Finance Bank?

Yes. Equitas Bank is used as the brand name. The bank's legal name is Equitas Small Finance Bank Limited. All three cards are issued by the same bank.

Is an Equitas credit card safe to use?

Yes. Equitas is an RBI-regulated scheduled bank, and your protection as a cardholder comes from RBI rules on unauthorised transactions and the lost card liability cover of up to ₹10 lakh. The bank's small size in cards doesn't change any of this.

Is the Equitas Tiga credit card lifetime free?

Not permanently. Equitas currently runs a limited-period offer that makes Tiga lifetime free. Its standard fee is ₹500 a year, which is waived if you spend ₹1.2 lakh in the previous anniversary year. When the offer ends, plan around the waiver.

Which Equitas credit card has the best rewards?

Selfe has the best rewards for most people. It earns 5X points, or about 3.5% back as vouchers, in two categories you choose, and 0.7% on everything else. PowerMiles beats it on foreign spends at roughly 4.5% back, but it costs ₹5,000 a year unless you spend ₹4.8 lakh.

Which Equitas credit card has lounge access?

Two Equitas credit cards have lounge access. Selfe gives 1 domestic lounge visit per calendar quarter, 4 a year. PowerMiles gives 2 domestic visits and 1 international visit every quarter, up to 8 and 4 a year.

What income do I need for an Equitas credit card?

It depends on the card. Equitas lists an annual income of ₹4.2 lakh to ₹5 lakh for Tiga, ₹5 lakh to ₹18 lakh for Selfe, and ₹18 lakh and above for PowerMiles. Banks check more than income, though. Our credit card eligibility guide and minimum CIBIL score guide cover those.

What is the forex markup on Equitas credit cards?

PowerMiles charges 2% on foreign currency transactions, and Selfe and Tiga charge 3.5%. If you’re looking for a card built for overseas spends, see our list of the best travel credit cards in India.

Do Equitas reward points expire?

Yes. Reward points on Tiga and Selfe expire 24 months after you earn them, and PowerMiles points expire after 36 months. Each redemption costs ₹99, and statement cashback needs at least 500 points, so redeem in larger batches.

What is the interest rate on Equitas credit cards?

Equitas has a standard interest rate of 3.75% a month (45% a year) across its card lineup. This rate applies to both revolving credit and cash advances.

Conclusion

Pick Selfe if you want a card that pays you back on the things you already buy, and pick PowerMiles only if your travel really is frequent and your income clears ₹18 lakh. Whichever one you choose, check the fee offer on the day you apply, and set a reminder for the waiver spend so you keep it.
