Your SBI credit card got declined, and you received an SMS saying it's blocked. Can you get a blocked SBI Card working again? Yes, most SBI Card blocks can be reversed.

But there's no one sure-shot "unblock" button or method. What you have to do next depends entirely on why the card was blocked.

This guide covers every reason SBI Card can be potentially blocked, with the exact fix for each. It also covers the one case where unblocking isn't possible at all, and the transaction switches that often get mistaken for a block.

TL;DR

  • There's no SMS to unblock an SBI credit card. The SMS service (5676791) can only block a card.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged and blocked? That card can't be reactivated. Request a reissue, and you'll get a new card with a new number.
  • Blocked for non-payment or over the limit? Pay the dues (at least the minimum amount due, or enough to get back under your limit). If you miss 4–6 payments, you'll also need to call and request reactivation.
  • Blocked for suspicious activity? Call the helpline: 1860 180 1290 or 39 02 02 02 (with your local STD code). Some cardholders can verify the flagged transaction with an OTP in the app.
  • Blocked for KYC? Update KYC through DigiLocker at sbicard.com/kycupload.
  • Card "declined" but not blocked? Check Manage Card Usage in the SBI Card app. A switched-off transaction type (online, international, etc.) can be the reason.

Case 1: card blocked as lost or stolen (can't be unblocked)

If you (or anyone with access to your account) blocked the card as lost, stolen or damaged, that plastic is dead for good. SBI Card's FAQ is clear: "Once a credit card is blocked, the same card cannot be re-activated."

What you can do is get a replacement card. It comes with a new card number and goes to your registered mailing address. Blocking the card doesn't close your credit card account, so your limit, history and reward points stay with the account.

How to request a reissue:

  • SBI Card app: Menu → Service Request → Reissue/Replace Card → select the card → Submit.
  • sbicard.com: log in → Requests → Reissue/Replace Card → select the card → Submit.
  • Helpline: call 1860 180 1290 or 39 02 02 02 (prefix your local STD code).

SBI Card's app also auto-reissues a card blocked as lost or stolen, according to its digital platform updates page. Remember to update your card details wherever it was saved for autopay, subscriptions and wallets, because the number changes.

🔎 Getting a new card number anyway? It's a good time to check whether your SBI card is still the right one. Find the best credit card for you on Monzy.

Case 2: blocked for non-payment or over the limit

These are the most common blocks, and the fix is to pay.

Over the credit limit. If you've used up your whole limit, SBI Card may block further use. Pay enough to bring your balance back below the limit. To check where you stand, SMS AVAIL XXXX (available limit) or BAL XXXX (outstanding) to 5676791.

Missed payments. SBI Card handles these in stages:

  1. First missed payment: the card may be blocked. Pay the total amount due (TAD) or at least the minimum amount due (MAD) from your latest statement, and the card is unblocked.
  2. Up to 3 missed payments in a row: the credit facility may be temporarily withdrawn. The fix is the same: pay the TAD or the MAD.
  3. 4–6 missed payments in a row: the credit facility may be permanently withdrawn. Pay the full outstanding amount, then call the helpline to request reactivation. SBI Card will review your case based on your past credit behaviour, so reactivation isn't guaranteed.
  4. More than 6 missed payments (written off): the card can't be reactivated. If you pay the full outstanding amount, SBI Card will process a CIBIL status clean-up (it says this takes 45–60 days after the money reaches it). It also lets you apply for the Unnati SBI Card, a card backed by a fixed deposit with State Bank of India.

To check your last payment, SMS PAYMENT XXXX to 5676791.

Late and missed payments also hurt your CIBIL score. If yours has taken a hit, our guides on improving your CIBIL score and fixing your score after a settlement explain how to recover. If you keep hitting your limit, read how to increase your credit card limit.

Case 3: blocked for suspicious activity or fraud

If SBI Card spots a transaction it thinks is fraudulent, it may block the card proactively to protect you.

To unblock it, call the helpline: 1860 180 1290 or 39 02 02 02 (prefix your local STD code). The agent will check the flagged transactions with you.

Two shortcuts SBI Card has added over the years, according to its digital platform updates page:

  • OTP verification in the app: "select cardholders" can unblock their account by confirming the potentially suspicious transactions with an OTP.
  • Callback request: when your card is blocked for a suspicious transaction, you're notified and can ask SBI Card to call you back to verify it.

If the flagged transaction really wasn't yours, don't unblock the card. Keep it blocked, report the fraud, and ask for a reissue.

If you get an alert for a transaction you didn't make and the card isn't blocked yet, block it at once: SMS BLOCK XXXX to 5676791 from your registered mobile number, or call the helpline.

Case 4: blocked for KYC

RBI rules require banks to refresh your KYC from time to time. If you don't respond to SBI Card's reminders, the card may be temporarily deactivated. To reactivate it:

  1. Go to sbicard.com/kycupload and log in.
  2. Select the card that's due for KYC renewal.
  3. Upload a recent passport-size photo.
  4. Choose DigiLocker and follow the steps.
  5. Submit the request.

Declined but not blocked? Check your transaction switches

Many "blocked card" cases aren't blocks at all. SBI Card lets you switch individual transaction types on or off, for domestic and international use: online, at shops (POS), and so on.

If a transaction type is switched off, those transactions are declined, and it looks just like a blocked card.

To switch a transaction type back on:

  • SBI Card app: log in → Manage Card Usage → Manage Card Transactions → choose the category → switch it on and set a limit.
  • sbicard.com: log in → Menu → Manage Card Usage → Manage Card Transactions.
  • ILA chatbot on sbicard.com: type "Manage Card Usage", log in, pick the category and confirm with the OTP sent to your registered mobile.

This is also the closest thing SBI Card offers to a temporary lock. If you've misplaced your card but think it'll turn up, switching off transactions keeps it safe without killing the card, and you can switch them back on later. A "BLOCK" request can't be undone.

International transactions need the international switch on. SBI Card counts any transaction in foreign currency, or in rupees in a country outside India (except Nepal and Bhutan), as international.

FAQs about unblocking an SBI credit card

Can I unblock my SBI credit card by SMS?

No. SBI Card's SMS service (5676791) can block a card, but there's no SMS to unblock one. Depending on why it was blocked, you can unblock it by paying your dues, updating KYC, calling the helpline, or switching transactions back on in the app.

How do I unblock my SBI credit card after blocking it as lost?

You can't. Once a card is blocked as lost, stolen or damaged, that card can't be reactivated. Request a reissue through the SBI Card app, sbicard.com or the helpline, and you'll get a new card with a new number. Your account stays open.

How long does it take to unblock an SBI card after paying dues?

SBI Card doesn't publish a timeline. For first or early missed payments, it says paying the total or minimum amount due gets the card unblocked. After 4–6 missed payments, you also need to call and request reactivation, and SBI Card reviews each case.

My SBI card was blocked for a suspicious transaction. What should I do?

Call 1860 180 1290 or 39 02 02 02 (with your local STD code) to verify the transaction. Some cardholders can verify it with an OTP in the SBI Card app. If the transaction wasn't yours, keep the card blocked and ask for a replacement.

Is there a temporary lock on the SBI Card app?

There's no separate "lock" as such, but you can switch off transaction types (such as domestic online, POS or international) under Manage Card Usage, and switch them back on later. A BLOCK request is permanent.

Does a blocked SBI credit card affect my CIBIL score?

The block itself doesn't, but missed payments that lead to a block do. SBI Card warns that delayed payments and non-payment can lower your credit score.

What is the SBI credit card customer care number?

1860 180 1290 or 39 02 02 02 (prefix your local STD code). Both are listed on sbicard.com as the 24x7 helpline.

Conclusion

Unblocking an SBI credit card starts with one question: why was it blocked? If it was reported lost or stolen, don't waste time trying to unblock it. Ask for a reissue. If it's an overdue or over-limit block, pay what's due.

Fraud blocks need a call (or an OTP if you're offered one), KYC blocks need DigiLocker, and a card that's just declining may only have a transaction switch turned off.

And if you're tired of a card that keeps getting in the way, it may be time to look at others. Compare options in our guide to the best credit card in India for your spending.
