You've just joined a new company. The salary is real, the offer letter is real, but your employment is still temporary until your probation is over.
Being on probation, however, doesn’t automatically disqualify you from getting a card. Approval depends on several factors, and some banks may consider one of them.
This article covers your options for getting a credit card during probation in India.
TL;DR
- You can sometimes get a credit card during probation, but no bank promises it.
- Your odds depend more on which bank you pick than on how good your salary is.
- Apply to just one bank. Each application leaves a hard enquiry on your CIBIL report.
- IDFC FIRST asks only for regular income, and ICICI weighs your relationship with the bank.
- If you need a card now, take an FD-backed card, such as SBI Card UNNATI.
Why probation is a hard filter at some banks
A credit card is unsecured. The bank gives you a limit, trusting that your salary keeps arriving.
But during probation, your employer can usually end the job on short notice. So, the bank sees a salary that might not exist in the next three months.
That’s why banks may not issue a credit card during your probation. They don't have any published rule as such; it’s just a factor in internal underwriting.
Several banks treat the first six months of a new job as a hard filter. So, they may reject your card application even if your credit profile is otherwise flawless.
The 6-month rule and the confirmation letter
A confirmation letter is the HR document that says your probation is over and you're a permanent employee. For banks, that confirmation letter or six months of service (whichever you can show first) is assurance that you're suitably employed.
Say you joined on 1 October. Six months takes you to 1 April, with six salary credits behind you. So, you should wait until April before applying for a credit card as a salaried person.
Most banks ask for your latest three salary slips anyway. So, you're waiting for at least three pay cycles even in the best case. The other checks that banks run (income, CIBIL score, age) are in the credit card eligibility guide.
Which banks are worth trying
No issuer publishes a probation policy, so it’s difficult to hand you a clean list of banks that approve on probation.
However, IDFC FIRST's eligibility terms just state regular income, without mentioning any minimum time in your current job. That's why you may have better odds of approval there.
ICICI Bank, on the other hand, says it considers your credit history, income and your relationship with the bank. For example, a salaried applicant with an ICICI salary account needs ₹2.4 lakh a year (₹20,000/month) to apply for a card. But without the account, that required income floor may be ₹3.6 lakh a year (₹30,000/month).
If you bank with ICICI, open iMobile and check Offers for a pre-approved card. The bank may have already assessed your history and relationship and have a card on offer.
⚠️ Watch out: Every application leaves a hard enquiry on your CIBIL report. The lender pulls your report to decide on a credit application, and it may put a dent on your overall score. Applying to four banks "to see who says yes" puts four of them on your report. So, pick one bank and apply just once.
If you can't wait: the FD-backed route
An FD-backed card is secured by a fixed deposit (FD), so the bank doesn’t have to bet on your job. The FD keeps earning interest. What you give up is access to that money while the card is open. SBI Card UNNATI starts at a ₹25,000 FD, with no annual fee for the first four years.
Notice period: stay or switch before you apply?
If you want a card, apply before you resign from your job. Once you're serving notice, employment verification gets harder because HR knows you're leaving. If you're already in your notice period, say so when asked. A mismatch found during verification gets flagged.
Switching also resets the clock, since a new employer means a new probation. Therefore, a card application made three months into the new job is prone to get rejected.
It’s easier to get approved while you're confirmed at the old job (of course, only if your credit profile looks good overall).
So, what should you do?
If you can wait, then wait for your employment confirmation letter from HR. Then apply once, at the bank where your salary account is. If you need a card sooner, take the FD-backed route and skip unsecured applications until you're confirmed.
FAQs about credit card during probation
Can I get a credit card while on probation in India?
Sometimes. No bank publishes a ban on probation applicants, but several treat the first six months of a new job as a hard filter in their internal rules. Your odds are best where you already hold the salary account, or with an FD-backed card that doesn't depend on your job at all.
Do I need a confirmation letter to get a credit card?
Not always, but it removes any doubt about your employment status. A confirmation letter from HR says probation is over and you're a permanent employee. If a bank asks for one and you don't have it yet, your practical choices are to wait or to go FD-backed.
Which bank gives a credit card on probation?
No bank promises it. IDFC FIRST lists only regular income in its public eligibility, and ICICI weighs your relationship with the bank. So, those two banks offer better odds of approval.
Can I apply for a credit card during my notice period?
You can, but it isn’t the best moment. Employment verification can get harder because HR knows you're leaving. Apply before you resign if you can, and answer verification questions honestly.
Is an FD-backed credit card a good option on probation?
Yes, if you need a card now. It's secured by a fixed deposit, so the bank isn't relying on your job to approve it. SBI Card UNNATI starts at a ₹25,000 FD.
