Searches for the
have tripled this week. Most people are asking the same thing:
The Kotak League credit card, which offers rewards and movie tickets at a relatively low annual fee, sounds like a pretty good deal. But is this ₹499 card, which promises 8X rewards and free PVR tickets, still worth it after Kotak's 2025 changes?
Actually, the real value of a credit card isn’t in what it offers on paper; it’s in what you get to earn and redeem. For the Kotak League card, can you put ₹1.25 lakh on the card every six months? If you can, the PVR tickets make the card worth having. If you can't, its base earn rate is among the lowest you'll find.
This review of the Kotak League Platinum covers the real earn rate, the PVR benefit, the fee and waiver, what changed in June 2025, and who should pick something else.

TL;DR
- Base earn rate is about 0.27%. You get 4 reward points per ₹150, and a point is worth ₹0.10 in Kotak's catalogue (or only ₹0.07 as cash).
- The 8X offer applies only to select spends. You get 8 points per ₹150 on airlines, travel agents, departmental stores, durables, electronics, and on spends above ₹2 lakh in a card year. That works out to about 0.53%.
- The PVR milestone is the real value. Spend ₹1.25 lakh in each six-month period and you get 4 PVR tickets (up to ₹400 each) or 10,000 points. That's a maximum of 8 tickets a year.
- The fee is ₹499 + GST, waived if your retail spends reach ₹50,000 in a year. Kotak sometimes issues the card also with no joining fee.
- Since June 1, 2025, rent, fuel, insurance, government, education, wallet loads and online gaming earn no points. Utilities earn only up to ₹35,000 per statement cycle. None of these even count towards the milestones.
- Verdict: it's worth it if you spend ₹2.5 lakh+ a year, mostly on regular shopping, and watch films at PVR. Most other people will do better with a cashback or lifetime free card.

How much does the Kotak League credit card actually earn?
Kotak advertises up to 8 reward points per ₹150. Here is how the earn rate really works.
Annual spend in a card year | Special categories* | Everything else |
|---|---|---|
Up to ₹2 lakh | 8 points per ₹150 | 4 points per ₹150 |
Above ₹2 lakh | 8 points per ₹150 | 8 points per ₹150 |
*Kotak's special categories are travel agencies and tour operators, package tour operators, airlines, electronics sales, durable goods and departmental stores. They're identified by the merchant category code (MCC), not by the brand name.
Kotak's own savings example values a point at ₹0.10. That's the rate when you redeem against mobile recharges, shopping, vouchers and similar options. Since June 1, 2025, cashing points (minimum 2,000 points) out to your statement gets only ₹0.07 per point.
So the real return looks like this:
- 4 points per ₹150: ₹0.40 back on ₹150, about 0.27%.
- 8 points per ₹150: ₹0.80 back on ₹150, about 0.53%.
- If you cash out instead of using the catalogue: about 0.19% and 0.37%.
For context, many lifetime free cards pay 1% or more on everyday spends. If the League Platinum is good value, it's because of the milestone, not the reward points. Read reward points vs cashback to see why ₹0.10 points are hard to love.
⚠️ Watch out: Kotak's FAQ says the "8 points on all spends" rate applies to eligible spends of ₹2 lakh and above in a card year. Kotak's own example only gives the higher rate on the ₹50,000 spent after the first ₹2 lakh. Don't expect your first ₹2 lakh to earn 8X retroactively.
The June 2025 reward exclusions: what earns nothing now
From June 1, 2025, Kotak changed its rewards across most of its cards. For the League Platinum, Kotak's page says:
Category | What happens on the League Platinum |
|---|---|
Utilities and telecom | Points only on the first ₹35,000 per statement cycle |
Rent | No points |
Fuel | No points |
Insurance | No points |
Government payments | No points |
Education | No points |
Wallet loads | No points |
Online skill-based gaming | No points |
Railways | No points |
And it's worse than it looks.
- Excluded spends don't count towards the milestone. ₹1.25 lakh of rent and insurance over six months gets you no PVR tickets.
- Kotak's MCC list says these categories are excluded from annual fee waiver thresholds too. Paying rent on the card won't help you reach the ₹50,000 waiver.
Kotak also charges transaction fees on some of these categories (such as rent, wallet loads, education and fuel) above set thresholds. Check the current MITC before you use the card for them. If most of your spending goes on bills, see our list of credit cards for utility payments instead.

The PVR benefit: how the League's milestone works
This is the real reason to get the card.
- Milestone: spend ₹1,25,000 in each six-month period.
- Reward: choose 4 free PVR tickets or 10,000 reward points.
- Annual maximum: 8 PVR tickets (two six-month periods).
- Ticket value: up to ₹400 per ticket. If the ticket costs more, you pay the difference plus booking or convenience fees.
- How you use them: Kotak issues a Star Pass code that you redeem online at pvrcinemas.com. Tickets work for any day and any show, and you can give them to someone else.
- Claim window: you must claim within 3 months after the six-month period ends.
- Cities: PVR tickets aren't available if you live in a city without PVR.
- Counting rule: transactions settled within the six-month window count. A purchase made on the last day but settled later moves into the next period.
Tickets or points? Four tickets at up to ₹400 each are worth up to ₹1,600. 10,000 points are worth ₹1,000 in the catalogue (₹700 as cash). If you'll actually use the tickets, take the tickets. If you won't, take the points.
What the League earns at three spend levels
Assuming that all spends are eligible (no rent, fuel or other excluded categories) and there are no special-category spends, here's a worked example. The points are valued at ₹0.10.
You spend | Reward points | Milestone | Total value | Effective return |
|---|---|---|---|---|
₹60,000 a year (₹5,000/month) | 1,600 pts = ₹160 | None | ₹160 (fee waived) | ~0.27% |
₹1.5 lakh a year (₹75,000 per half) | 4,000 pts = ₹400 | None | ₹400 (fee waived) | ~0.27% |
₹2.5 lakh a year (₹1.25 lakh per half) | 8,000 pts = ₹800 | 8 PVR tickets (up to ₹3,200) | Up to ₹4,000 | up to ~1.6% |
The jump between the second and third rows is because of the milestone reward. At ₹2.5 lakh a year, the League Platinum returns about 1.6% if you use all 8 tickets at full value. If you take points instead of tickets, it's ₹800 + ₹2,000 = ₹2,800, or about 1.1%.
Missing the milestone even by ₹5,000 in one half of the year will be costly. The spend has to be in each six-month window, not just ₹2.5 lakh across the year. You can check different spend splits on Monzy's reward calculator.
Kotak League credit card fee and waiver
- Joining fee: ₹499 + GST, or nil. Kotak lists both variants, and its movie cards page shows the joining fee as ₹0. Only the paid variant gets the 5,000-point (₹500) joining gift, which effectively cancels out the joining fee.
- Annual fee: ₹499 + GST from the second year.
- Waiver: at least ₹50,000 in retail spends in a year. Excluded categories don't count.
If you spend ₹50,000+ a year on the card, it's effectively free after the first year. Still, a waived fee doesn't make the card good value. At ₹60,000 a year, you get about ₹160 back. To see whether any card's fee pays for itself, use the annual fee breakeven calculator.
Is the Kotak League a lifetime free credit card?
No. The Kotak League Platinum isn't a lifetime free credit card. Its annual fee is ₹499 + GST, and it's waived only in years when you spend ₹50,000. A lifetime free card has no fee and no spend condition.
If having no fee matters more to you than PVR tickets, compare the best lifetime free credit cards in India. Several of them earn more than 0.27% on everyday spends.
Who should get the Kotak League credit card
- People who already spend ₹1.25 lakh+ every six months on shopping, groceries, electronics or travel bookings, and not on rent or bills.
- People who watch films at PVR and live in a PVR city. The tickets are where the value is.
- People who want a Kotak card to build a relationship with the bank. Here's the full Kotak credit card lineup.
Who should pick something else
- People who spend less than ₹2.5 lakh a year. Without the milestone, you're earning about 0.27%. A cashback credit card will return several times more.
- People who pay rent, fuel, insurance or school fees by card. None of these earn points or count towards milestones. Look at fuel credit cards or cashback cards for groceries, fuel and utilities.
- Mostly online shoppers. Platform co-branded and cashback cards usually beat 0.27%.
- Travellers who want lounge access. Kotak's League Platinum page doesn't list airport lounge access. See how credit card lounge access works.
- People outside Kotak's sourcing cities, or earning under ₹5 lakh a year. You may not qualify. Check your credit card eligibility first.
